#KonjacSponge is this month's feature for #productswelove

June 26, 2022

I discovered this beauty a few years ago while killing some time at an airport shop. The first one I bought was from a Korean beauty brand, of the charcoal variety. I liked it so much that I looked for it again and ran across this one, my current fav, from #KikoMilano.

What is a Konjac sponge??? Konjac sponges are made from konjac, a porous root vegetable native to Asia. Glucomannan is a dietary fiber contained in the bulb of the konjac plant. Glucomannan expands when mixed with water, so the sponge will also expand and become very soft when soaked in warm water. Konjac sponges were originally invented and used in Japan to bathe infants.

What are the benefits of a Konjac sponge? These sponges are plant-based and sustainable, and so soft and gentle when used wet on the skin (with or without cleanser), they can be used to help remove dirt and oil from the pores and provide a gentle exfoliation. There are different varieties of Konjac sponges, each suited to a different skin type. (I recommend if you do a physical exfoliation, to do it just once per week; especially if you already use chemical exfoliants in your skincare products, i.e. AHA, BHA, or retinoids). I like to use this sponge before applying makeup for a special event, as I find it leaves my skin very smooth allowing for a flawless makeup application.

Tips for using a Konjac sponge: Only use the sponge when wet (soak it in warm water for a few minutes before use to allow it to absorb water and expand). You can use it alone or with a cleanser; only use it after you've removed makeup. Do not scrub vigorously with the sponge (gentle use works great and protects your skin barrier). After each use, rinse, then gently squeeze out excess soap and water and hang to dry completely in between uses.

Happy Cleansing and Skin-caring :)

Cheers,

Dr. B
